Review Zynaptiq Morph 3

Zynaptiq MORPH 3 is a unique state-of-the-art sound design tool that is now available in V3. The previous versions have already been used intensively in games and films for many years (DOOM soundtrack, Blade Runner 2049, etc.). But MORPH 3 Pro (I will go into the version in particular later) is also a real recommendation for my sound design in the techno area.

Zynaptiq MORPH 3 takes two input sounds and combines them to produce a new hybrid sound that has elements of each and can switch between them with ease. And that is not even remotely comparable to somehow bringing two signals together in the DAW with adjusted volumes or reverb. Such mixing of signals cannot be achieved with normal sidechain technology and, for example, Wavesfactory Trackspacer or tools like Devious Machines Texture. MORPH has a completely different approach and goes far beyond anything else.

Features of the new Pro version compared to the previous version: 6 new algorithms (11 in total), a patent-pending real-time style transfer module, file playback, transient bypass functionality, a redesigned and scalable UI, Transient Module, improved Formant Shifter (+- 24 semitones of range), Lowcut/Highcut Filter for all Mixer channels, and much more.

The sound is manipulated using the central X/Y pad. The X-axis is the volume crossfade between the source and sidechain. Spectral morphing then takes place on the Y-axis. At this point, I recommend automating the X and Y axes. This creates very organic-sounding creative mixes of the two signals. I often just play with the two parameters in real-time and record the sound in the background. At the end, I then cut the best parts in the DAW to continue working with the WAV.

With MORPH it is possible, for example, to merge a synth pad into the rhythm of a drum loop or to mix a pad with an atmospheric vocal in a unique way. When I create drum loops for my sample packs, I like to add a Foley touch. To do this I mix field recordings with the rhythm of the drum loop, for example. The result is particularly interesting, which gives the loop a certain fascination, as it simply sounds different, without these elements that are perfectly blended with the drum loop. The new transient module delivers great results, especially when using drum loops or transient material, as the transients do not sound as washed out as in the earlier MORPH version.

MORPH is also brilliant for organic mixing of atmospheric pads/strings. Any atmospheric sound, no matter how boring it sounds, becomes all the more interesting if you add wind, crackling fire, the sound of insects or whatever. There are no limits to your imagination here.

The algorithms vary wildly – and that is great! Depending on the source material, it is worth investing some time to find what comes closest to the desired result. You just have to experiment a bit. In the Pro version, I like the Fusion algorithm best. The artifact-free results are simply great. Sonance washes out the two signals when morphing almost like a reverb – also very impressive. But the Interweave algorithm, which is already included in the normal 3 version, also sounds great.

Another brilliant new feature is that you now have the option of loading audio files directly into MORPH via the Modeler module without having to go through the sidechain signal. This makes it much easier to use. But this is not a simple audio player. No, the Pro version has 5 highly interesting and completely different-sounding options for playing the signal before morphing. What you can create with a simple vocal using this tool is simply unbelievable. Zynaptiq has always been all about experimentation and MORPH is no exception.

If you want to work without latency, you can use the IMPRINT algorithms (without additional modules), which are only available in V3.

Final Verdict

Even though there are already a few other morph plugins on the market, in my opinion this one is by far the best. It is a real weapon for my sound design and not “just” recommended for game and film sound design! With MORPH, nothing sounds like you are used to – promised! This Swiss Knife comes highly recommended!
