SOR Waldorf Microwave Presets offers 131 patches (67 programs and 64 multis/splits) for Waldorf Microwave 1. You get evolving ambient textures, organic pads, classic house stabs, hard-pumping basses, unique effects, glassy, cold, powerful leads, and many wonderful analog-sounding patches. The presets are modern and retro and go well with every genre of electronic music. You can modify most sounds via Aftertouch, Bender, and/or Modulation.

As this unusual Synth never fails to impress with its distinct sound, I have added the Microwave 1 plugin to my SOR-Blog under “Best Synth VST Plugins”. I really enjoy these slightly gritty, broken wavetable tones and the powerful filter, which sounds truly unique. It’s simply a fantastic recreation of a classic!

The download of ‘SOR Waldorf Microwave Presets’ includes the original synth patches (MIDI File dump) I produced for the classic hardware synthesizer (128 patches), as well as a revised and perfected new version for the Plugin (131 patches). 24 MIDI files are also included for musical inspiration and context; you can hear them in the demo.

Please note: Since the Microwave has no internal effects, a few standard effect plugins were used for the demo. All sounds, except the drums, are from the Microwave 1 plugin.

A legend returns: Microwave 1 Plugin

Microwave 1 Hardware

Waldorf Music revolutionized the music market in the 90s with the Microwave 1. The hardware synthesizer took the scene by storm at the time and brought the wavetable sounds of the 80s into the world of emerging electronic music.

The unit was a digital/analog hybrid synthesizer in which digitally sampled wavetables are processed via analog VCA envelope and VCF sections (filters). The result was a classic, warm, and mighty sound. For me, this cult device sounded simply breathtaking. Hard techno/rave noises, deep basses, and typical house stabs were his specialty! He was also characterized by gentle lead sounds à la Vangelis. I believe the analog sounds produced by the Microwave are significantly better than the digital sounds produced by its successor, the Microwave 2. Ever since the plugin version, a Microwave with its distinct personality belongs in every arsenal because it simply sounds different than everything else.

Waldorf developed the Microwave 1 plugin over years of detailed work and with great passion. It is impossible to overstate this! The idiosyncrasies of the original hardware have been carefully analyzed and digitally recreated. This unique sound is based on innovative digital and analog designs developed long before the era of DSP-based instruments. This synth has an amazing, distinct sound. This makes it so charming—it’s a fantastic recreation of a classic!
